Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
