During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for fear of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
